Employment and career planning Support for the Engineering Profession

Introduction

Through extensive community action research we have established the information needs of immigrants with engineering backgrounds (IEB) in Ontario and Canada, Based on this we have developed a systematic employment support pathway for you. This takes you through seven online tools, which should be completed in sequence below for you to derive maximum benefit from these.

These tools comprise:

  • Tool 1: Self-Assessment and Information Tutorial
  • This tool helps you to make a more informed career decision by guiding you on the following:

    • Language and communication competencies
    • Workplace safety in Canada
    • Recognition of your educational qualifications
    • Licensing and regulation of engineering in Canada
    • Employment options

  • Tool 2: Portfolio Builder
  • This tool allows you to build an engineering specific portfolio that helps you to translate your skills and experience into language that Canadian employers understand, and also allows you to print an engineering resume template.

  • Tool 3: Real-time Labour market intelligence report by engineering discipline
  • Measuring trends in the engineering labor market can often be a delayed and tedious process. Currently, labor market data is only available after gathering statistical information within a specific time frame. We are moving towards a more efficient and helpful data analysis of the Ontario engineering labor market by immediately interpreting data from jobs listed in our database. Presently, we have a significant sample of nearly 1250 jobs listed in our database from a fifteen month period ending January 31, 2011. The best part is that as newer jobs are added to our database, our information is automatically updated for you! For the first time labor market reports by engineering discipline generated by our unique skills tracker technology are being made available to our regular members.

  • Tool 4: Locating Engineering Employers in Ontario
  • This tool contains GIS mapping of engineering employers categorized by engineering discipline across Ontario.

  • Tool 5: Jobs List
  • Our Job board is available to all our regular members. This is a verified list of engineering jobs as these become available in selected companies across Ontario.

  • Tool 6: Engineering Publications by discipline
  • An evolving list of organizations and related publications that aid engineers in keeping up to date with the developments and terminologies in general or discipline-specific engineering

  • Tool 7: Software inventory by discipline
  • This provides an evolving inventory of software being used in engineering industries.

    Note: Tools 1, 2, 6 and 7 are relevant to all immigrants with engineering backgrounds across Canada. Tools 3, 4 and 5 are specifically for the Province of Ontario and will be adapted for the rest of Canada in the coming year.
